Betrayed by Time

The Hard Times
I picked up a parentless Scholar.
I promised him food and shelter, supported his studies.
He swore to Anna, pointing to the sky, that if he ever betrayed me, he'd die a gruesome death.
Later, the Scholar passed the imperial exam and married the legitimate Princess, while I lay naked in a foul ditch.
Anna didn't cry. She buried me, one handful of dirt at a time.
