Prologue
Jonathan Steele and I were the talk of Independence City. Everyone said we were a match made in heaven, the perfect pair - the Royal Princess and the Young Lord of the Steele family.
We discussed the affairs of state, hoping for peace from coast to coast. Our time together was brief, but we didn't dwell on trivial matters of the heart. We held greater ideals close to our chests.
When he was stationed at the northern border, I set up soup kitchens in the outskirts of the city. While he went over paperwork in his study, I sat nearby annotating classical texts. When he was busy working late at the office, I'd thoughtfully send a letter: 'All is well at home, don't worry.'
He said I wasn't like other young ladies, obsessed with frivolous things and counting eyelashes when bored. He praised me for being mature and composed, understanding and gracious. Little did he know that as a Royal Princess, I was actually the most vivacious and charming of all.
I had exhausted myself trying to keep up with him, out of breath from the effort. Until that day when I got into an argument with someone, and Jonathan stood by coldly observing. Later, when we were alone at home, he said coolly: 'The other person had more of a point in that matter.'
It was then I realized he had never really been on my side.
